CHARACTER EDUCATION:  A DISTRICT-WIDE PRIORITY

AT WEST ALLEGHENY

Character education has been implemented through various initiatives, including the DARE program, for almost two decades in the West Allegheny School District and has evolved into a comprehensive program for students at all grade levels.

The goal of the district-wide character education program, to develop and reinforce positive character traits, is reflected in various activities, assignments, and projects emphasizing the following Six Pillars of Character:  Responsibility, Caring, Respect, Trustworthiness, Fairness, and Citizenship.  Using the following list (Words of the Month) as a guide facilitates a universal approach to the process at the elementary, middle school and high school levels throughout the school year.

Words of the Month (Six Pillars of Character)

October - Responsibility

November - Caring

December - Caring

January - Respect

February - Trustworthiness

March - Fairness

April - Citizenship

May - Responsibility
