For this activity, you will be using your pumpkin to determine the circumference, height, weight and the number of seeds inside the pumpkin. You will work with your group. You will record all of the estimates and actual measurements of each member in your group.
string
centimeter ruler
scale
paper towel
Pumpkin Table (worksheet)
Look at your pumpkin. How big around (middle of the pumpkin) do you think it is? This is the circumference of the pumpkin. Estimate how many centimeters (cm) and record this answer in your table. Then, take a piece of string and stretch it around the middle. Now lay the string along your ruler or meter stick. What is the circumference? Record this measurement on your table.
Estimate the height of your pumpkin in centimeters. Record the estimate. Then take the actual measurement and record it.
How heavy is your pumpkin? Record your estimate in pounds. Weigh your pumpkin on the scale. Record the weight.
How many are inside of your pumpkin? Record your estimate. Ask an adult to cut open your pumpkin. Scoop out the pulp and seeds. Separate the pulp from the seeds. Throw the pulp away. Keep and count the seeds. Think! What would be the easiest way to count the seeds? Are you going to count them one by one? Is there an easier way to count the seeds?
On a sheet of paper, answer this question:
How are you going to count your seeds?
Explain your thinking.
Now, count all of the seeds. Record the answer.
